Slotted barrel hoods are ventilation devices that exhaust air contaminants like dust, vapors, and fumes from industrial containers. Featuring a curved or rectangular design that can be sized to fit around any barrel, vat, or drum, slotted barrel hoods play an important part in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of a workspace.

How Do Slotted Barrel Hoods Work?

Slotted barrel hoods manipulate air velocity to maximize capture. The wide but narrow slot forces air to move faster to enter it, increasing suction strength. The tapered back chamber of the hood forms a plenum that equalizes suction across the slot band.

Slotted barrel hoods connect to ducts though a 2” high duct collar. Ductwork can be fitted over or inside the collar depending on the installation. For example, if the hood is taking in liquid vapor, fitting ductwork under the collar will keep moisture from leaking outside the ductwork.

What Are the Main Applications of Slotted Barrel Hoods?

Slotted barrel hoods safely exhaust particulates, fumes, and vapors emitted from industrial containers such as barrels, drums, or vats. Their curved or rectangular design fits securely around these containers to draw in air containing:

  • Dust and powder that can serve as a fire hazard if left unaddressed, and as an irritant to lungs, eyes and throats;

  • Fumes, vapors, and off-gas from toxic or caustic chemicals that are dangerous to breathe;

  • Other air contaminants that can impact worker safety and the purity of the manufacturing process.

By exhausting these contaminants, slotted barrel hoods contribute to the cleanliness and safety of an industrial work environment.

How Do Slotted Barrel Hoods Improve Work Environments?

Slotted barrel hoods improve industrial operations by creating a safer, cleaner work environment.

Lower fire risk: By removing combustible dust and powder, slotted barrel hoods lower the risk of fire.

Maintain breathing zone: The “breathing zone” is a zone within a 10 inch radius of a worker’s mouth and nose that must be clear of airborne contaminants. By removing irritating dust and dangerous chemical fumes, slotted barrel hoods maintain the air quality of the breathing zone.

Reduce operating costs: Slotted barrel hoods perform exhaust functions at the source of air contaminants. By localizing suction to exactly where it is needed, facilities save on operating costs.

Control cleanliness of environment: By exhausting contaminants at their source, slotted barrel hoods prevent unwanted materials from drifting into other aspects of the manufacturing process, giving facilities control over the cleanliness of the environment.

How to Specify a Slotted Barrel Hood

Consider the following characteristics when specifying a slotted barrel hood:

Materials: Slotted barrel hoods can be built out of a variety of materials with qualities suited for different use cases. In order from least to most expensive:

  • Raw steel and galvanized steel are used in low-temperature, non-chemical applications.

  • Rust-resistant aluminum and stainless steel are best in wet and humid environments.

  • Stainless steel’s high melting point makes it useful for high-temperature applications.

  • Polymer hoods excel when working with chemicals that corrode metal.

Shape: Slotted barrel hoods can be sized to fit around any round or rectangular vessel to maximize source capture. They can be installed just above the vessel to capture particulates that are lighter than air, and just below to capture particulates heavier than air.

Mounting Brackets: Mounting brackets are tabs added to the sides or back of a slotted barrel hood that anchor the device to structural members or mounting material.

Blast Gates and Volume Dampers: Blast gates and volume dampers fine-tune the amount of air flowing into a slotted barrel hood to achieve desired suction. They also help maintain consistent airflow across a series of hoods.

Drain Fittings: A drain fitting can be added to a slotted barrel hood to capture and redirect liquid condensate.
